Dear PBJC Friends,

PBJC presidents come in all types – male, female, business background, professionals, self-employed, full-time moms – all with shared and individual experiences.  All have learned from mentors, past presidents and contemporaries.

In April I had the privilege of attending a unique leadership-training program sponsored by United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ).  At a retreat in Maryland, some 38 presidents and presidents-elect, from all over America and Canada, came together to learn, daven and interact.  It was exhilarating, awesome and overwhelming – an opportunity to become a more focused president – to grow – to take the next steps up the ladder.  It was Sulam.

The program was a reminder of why we have a Synagogue.  It was a reminder of our core values and what they mean to us.  I know our PBJC “culture” and every congregation has a culture unique to them.  Yet all of the participants, whether 190 families or 1710 families, are facing the same financial and membership problems.  We need to work at being more inclusive, better listeners, and more goal oriented.  Topics of great interest were not just reviewed but they were discussed for applicable answers.  There is so much more that we can do in every phase of PBJC.  We will continue to improve our strengths and better address our weaknesses.

The retreat was an adventure.  The program was over subscribed so our living quarters were doubled up.  It’s been some time since I’ve doubled up, but it was like boot camp with synagogue war stories.  At all the meals there were stories as we interacted and questioned one another on programs, old and new, fundraisers and “how do you handle ….” anything from dues to High Holy Day honors.

I will be asking our finance committee to budget for Sulam going forward.

June brings a new Chevra board to PBJC.  Let’s work together to make PBJC an even better Schule for our families.

Alan
